'Tatanka-Iyotanka (Sitting Bull)' pencil drawing by Richard Adams

Tatanka-Iyotanka (Sitting Bull)
by
Richard Adams
his portrait of Sitting Bull is the third in the "Western History Series". Sitting Bull typically wore one or two coup feathers in his hair rather than an elaborate headdress. His simple clothing speaks to the understated nature of Sitting Bull. The portrait was taken by D. F. Barry in 1885, several weeks after Sitting Bull's surrender. The oddly-appearing crucifix around his neck was given to him by Father De Smet at the peacemaking council in 1868. Because of the lack of focus in the original photograph, many of the details in the drawing were created based on similar photographs and imagination.
